In the world of electric retrofitting, not all motorcycles are created equal. Some bases are simply better than others — and BMW Airheads are among the very select few motorcycles for which electric conversion is not a compromise, but a natural evolution.
What is a BMW Airhead?
The term "Airhead" refers to BMW R-series motorcycles equipped with an air-cooled boxer engine, produced between the 1970s and the early 1990s. The models concerned: R60, R75, R80, R80 G/S, R100, R100 RS, R100 RT. These motorcycles share a common architecture — a steel double-cradle frame, a longitudinal boxer engine, shaft drive — and a common philosophy: simplicity, robustness, reliability.
Today, they are sought-after motorcycles on the used market. Well-maintained, they achieve considerable mileage without structural damage. And this is precisely what makes them exceptional conversion bases: you start with a healthy, solid platform whose heritage value is recognized.

The Airhead architecture: why it's perfect for electric
The electric conversion of a motorcycle is based on a simple principle: remove the thermal powertrain and replace it with an electric motor + battery pack + controller assembly. The difficulty is integrating these elements cleanly, efficiently, and consistently with the original motorcycle's dynamic behavior.
On a BMW Airhead, three factors favor conversion:
- Engine space — The Airhead boxer engine occupies a precise and well-defined volume within the frame. Once removed, this space naturally accommodates the electric motor and part of the battery pack, without cutting or modifying the frame.
- Curb weight — A BMW R80 weighs approximately 195 kg (430 lbs) dry. This is light enough that the addition of the battery pack (30 to 50 kg depending on capacity) remains within reasonable limits and does not alter handling.
- Shaft drive — The BMW shaft drive is a considerable advantage for conversion. There is no chain to adapt, no output sprocket to modify. Electric torque, which is higher and more linear than thermal torque, is perfectly compatible with this type of transmission.
What the conversion changes in the motorcycle's behavior
An original BMW Airhead is an enjoyable but demanding motorcycle. It requires careful attention to adjustments (carburetor, ignition, valves), engine warm-up before intensive use, and careful temperature management in hot weather. The electric version eliminates all these constraints.
Electric torque is available from the first turn of the wheel, without revving. In the city, this translates into remarkable fluidity and superior riding comfort. On the road, power is constantly available, over a much wider rev range than the thermal engine. And the silence — characteristic of electric vehicles — gives riding an almost meditative quality that original Airhead riders have never experienced.
The Bymoss approach to Airheads
Bymoss does not design its conversions as mechanical transplants. Each project is a collaboration between the workshop and the motorcycle owner. Before any intervention, the condition of the motorcycle is evaluated in detail: frame, braking, forks, original wiring. If elements require refurbishment, they are addressed before conversion — the resulting motorcycle must be perfect in every way.
The selection of electrical components is the other differentiating point. Bymoss works with motors, controllers, and battery packs whose quality and durability are validated. It's not the cheapest component that's chosen, it's the one that best suits the project and guarantees long-term reliability.

Why are BMW Airheads ideal for electric conversion?
Their double-cradle frame offers generous engine space, their curb weight is low (190–210 kg depending on the model), and their shaft drive is perfectly compatible with electric torque. These are robust motorcycles whose structure easily survives conversion.
Which BMW Airhead to choose for a conversion?
The R80 and R100 models are the most recommended. The overall condition of the motorcycle (healthy frame, functional braking, absence of structural rust) takes precedence over the exact model. For an opinion on your motorcycle: bymoss.bike/pages/contact
How long does a conversion at Bymoss take?
The duration depends on the finish level and the initial condition of the motorcycle. Precise lead times are communicated during the quote. Planning is discussed directly with the team in Lyon.
